Common hypnosis techniques - A Bugs Bunny analogy

We have all seen the Bugs Bunny cartoons where he swings the watch in front of his adversary and hypnotises them to do silly and funny things. What I am going to do today is relate Bugs’ hypnosis techniques and how it relates to the common day.

Swinging watch = hypnosis induction
So Elma Fud wants to shoot Bugs Bunny but then Bugs uses a watch and swings it in front of Elma’s eyes until he is almost sleeping. This can be directly related to a hypnotic induction which is the first step to hypnotising someone. The induction is a way of putting your subject into a relaxed state that makes it easier to put suggestions into their mind. Common techniques used in this day and age is to have the subject lie down and for you to mention relaxing scenarios that they can picture themselves in.

Bugs tells Elma to do something stupid = suggestion
This is the part where Elma will shoot himself in the foot or something like that without being able to stop himself. This is the suggestion part where the hypnotist puts a suggestion into the subjects mind. The cartoons speed this process up but what happens here is the subject is on the verge of sleep, but not quite, and their reaction process is extremely slow. This is the time that you can tell them to do something and there will be little resistance to that command.

Elma is waking up and Bug’s needs to swing the watch again = contact
This is when it has been a little time and Elma starts to realise what he is doing and begins to ‘wake up’. Bugs then needs to induce him again which correlates to contact. You need to be in control as the hypnotist and if the subject starts to control their thinking pattern without your suggestion you will lose them. Make sure that if you are hypnotising someone to constantly be in control and do not let your attention waver. Many hypnotists keep eye contact as much as possible because it keeps them focused on what they are doing.

Other hypnosis techniques
I hope the Bugs Bunny analogy was helpful in describing these common techniques. There are many other ways to persuade someone to do what you want including yourself (self hypnosis). Once you get better you can even skip the hypnosis induction and implement suggestion successfully! This is a little more advanced but trust me anyone can learn.

How to stop smoking using hypnosis

Smoking is one of the biggest addictions that is world wide, which suit’s the cigarette companies but this is a habit that does you nothing but damage so how can you use hypnosis to quit?

There are 2 options available:
1) self hypnosis
2) hypnotherapy

Using self hypnosis to quit smoking
This technique is the cheaper option but requires you to remember to use the principles everyday. So the key here is to make a note of when you smoke, is it when you stress, is it a social situation, is it after a coffee, bottom line what causes you to want to have a smoke.

The next step is to write down these triggers so that you can be aware of them the next time you smoke. Now you know and realise your trigger you need to find a different reaction to associate with it that is not smoking.
E.g. Just had a coffee and need a smoke should change to just had a coffee and I need a drink of water.

This is a simple example but it helps to illustrate how you can change your thinking and reaction.
The way the self hypnosis works is to remind yourself everyday about your triggers and say out loud what your preferred reaction will be. When you feel the craving remind yourself again your preferred reaction and continue to say it until you do it. After doing this for a while you will automatically react in the preferred way without having to think about it and hence stopped your smoking thanks to self hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy
This would be a bit more expensive but it is a good option if you do not have the discipline for the above method. You put yourself in the hands of a professional who will use the same technique described above and will make sure that your thinking patterns change for the better.

Where can I learn self hypnosis?
The best course at the moment is the ‘Power of Conversational Hypnosis’ (link at the top right of this screen) when it comes to learning to hypnotise yourself and others so definitely check it out.

Self Hypnosis - My Experience

Can you hypnotise yourself? Can you create suggestions in your own mind to make yourself better at something or stop a bad habit? The answer is yes!

This form of ‘self therapy’ is done everyday and it is just a matter of allowing your mind to break down your psychological walls. I guess the best example is when you see professional sports people before a competition and they are speaking to themselves and are having some alone time. Personally I have been a competitive gymnast for over 10 years and I actually used to use self hypnosis myself. It would be the warm up time and I would be stretching out, this is the time that you feel the most pressure… the anticipation and it gets to most people. You basically need confirmation that you are prepared and that everything will be fine, that you are prepared.

My self hypnosis technique
I would use my stretching time to put my mind and body in a relaxed state. Then I would confirm (under my breath) “you are prepared”, “confident”, “ready” and “will focus on technique”. These where my NLP hypnosis phrases that helped with my negative association to competition and pressure. Needless to say I have quite a few gold medals at home which are a visual confirmation of success and preparation paying off. Everyone is different so I am not saying that these will work for you but you never know, we might have similar neuro-linguistic programming.

Self hypnosis in my working world
I find that I handle stress and pressure much better than most simply because I do not allow my mind to go to a negative place. Of course I am human and sometimes I might slip but if it happens I take a little time to myself and use positive suggestive phrases to remind myself that these issues are actually a positive that can be overcome. It works and all I can say is that people who have listened to me and genuinely try to do the same are also finding success with this self hypnosis technique.

Where can you learn self hypnosis principles?
These principles can definitely be learned by anyone and if you to genuinely want to learn them then I would recommend having a look at the conversational hypnosis link to your right, it is used by thousands of people world wide.

Self hypnosis for weight loss

When I watch the biggest loser I see the trainers either screaming at the participants or giving positive reinforcement and support. Either way it is an inspirational thing to watch as these people transform themselves physically and psychologically.

Now you are probably thinking, “I understand biggest loser and weight loss, but where does the self hypnosis come in?” It all begins when you see them looking at themselves in the mirror and they are overweight and depressed. Their responses are always that they feel so depressed when that image is in front of them and they tell themselves to avoid the issue. This is self hypnosis because they are actually programming their NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) to react in a certain way to images and experience.

Using self hypnosis to lose the weight
Lets continue with the biggest loser and move forward to when they lose their first pound. The reaction is always that “I think I can do this, I will not give up“. This is the beginning of their self hypnosis journey where they are telling themselves that they can lose weight. The beauty of the show is that the environment the contestants are in is positive and supportive which helps with their change of NLP. As the weeks go by they get more confident and continue to confirm that weight loss is achievable and easy.

Lets move forward to when they have the ‘make over’ and realise that their thoughts are being confirmed and they have changed their psychological connection with weight loss being unachievable. They have been telling themselves that they can accomplish their goal and they do.

Relating it to yourself
If you seriously want to use this technique to overcome your weight than here are some tips to improve your self hypnosis journey:

  • Create an environment where you can stay inspired and confident. (plaster your room walls with biggest loser pictures, goal weight, inspirational quotes.
  • Have written down next to your bed that “I can lose weight and it is possible”, “do not feel down because you can always pick yourself up” and notes to that effect. Having it written down will help you to confirm this to yourself everyday
  • Create a positive response to weight loss and sticking to your diet plan.
  • If you slip and get tempted stay away from negative connotations and focus on being positive to make it up in other areas.

Believe in yourself
That is basically it… Make sure you believe in yourself and you will achieve your goal! Self hypnosis is amazing because you can change your own beliefs for the better so what are you waiting for. YOU CAN DO IT.

Sports hypnosis

This is a form of coaching and it can also be used by athletes when they want to improve their performance or training.

Hypnosis as a coach
The 2 most important things that you can teach to your athletes is confidence and technique. I mean an athlete with the perfect technique is brilliant but if they have little confidence then they will never win.

Associate positive suggestion with the correct technique

Most coaches use the negative connotation with the wrong technique being used and this becomes a problem with the neuro linguistic programming of the athlete. So what this means is that the athlete is reminded of what they are doing wrong not what they are doing right and this creates a negative reaction to doing that particular move or skill.

Positive example:

I began coaching a squad of boys (gymnastics) and they had been coached with negative suggestion so they where always saying what they could not do. I began highlighting when they did something right and if they did incorrect technique I would not say “wrong” but divert their attention by saying,” just focus on this one thing.” Once they focused on one thing they are usually successful and then I give positive feedback, “great job, perfect, that is so much better,” and they remember the positive experience with that particular move.

A coaches example will rub off on the athletes
This is where self hypnosis comes in and your athletes will begin to use positive association on themselves. I began to see it in my boys after they began to improve. I would give them a program to do and they would make sure that they did it, if a skill became difficult then they would stay positive and say “I can do this” instead of “it’s to hard“.

Constant use of positive persuasion
Make sure that as a coach you constantly use positive association and encourage your athletes to do so. It is especially important when it comes to competition because this is where their confidence has to be at its highest. All I can say is results speak for themselves and that is what I have gotten with this particular technique.

Beware of free hypnosis

Yes there is such a thing as free hypnosis but that is coming from people who do not know what they are talking about. Professional hypnotists will never give their secrets away for free so if you are looking for a free ride stop now.

So is there any free hypnosis information
Yes there is tones of information that is out there that you can find but it is educational and will give you information about hypnosis, not how to do it.
If you seriously want to learn how to hypnotise then you need to take a course… a course from a real professional.

How can I find an affordable course?
It depends on what you want to learn,

  • Stage Hypnosis

  • Persuasion Hypnosis
  • Conversational Hypnosis
  • Self Hypnosis
  • Hypnotherapy

If you are interested in learning the first 4 options then yes there is quite an affordable option. One of them is to your right so I would suggest taking a look.

If its hypnotherapy you are after then I would suggest having a look at a hypnotherapy school or you can ask a Therapist if they can give you a referral.
